The second edition of the Celebrity Cricket League will be held from January 27 to February 19, 2012, with matches not just at Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, but also Kolkata, Kochi, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. That’s not the only thing that’s got us excited. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has joined the Celebrity Cricket League. Along with Mrs Radarscope, he has founded a team consisting of Malayalam movie stars. Now you already know the CCL has a Bollywood team (Mumbai Heroes) owned by Salman Khan, and other teams from the Telugu, Kannada and Tamil film industries. Salman’s team didn’t fare well in the first edition of the CCL, and now with Mohandas team joining the fray, the competition is only going to get more intense. And that’s not all. Wanted producer Boney Kapoor has also bought a team – of Bengali movie stars! Says Boney, “Film and cricket have been my passions. CCL gives me an opportunity to enjoy cricket. So what if it is with celebrities? I feel most Indians have grown up on cricket and it gives me double joy to see how celebrities are trying to excel in this sport.” So the second edition will see Salman competing with his good friend, too. We wonder if this ‘sporting’ rivalry would extend off the field.

He feels Cannes provides a platform for the global film fraternity to exchange and share ideas.

“In my opinion, the ideal reason for going to Cannes would be to showcase a movie, but you can rent space also. The best way to be here is to have a film competing in the festival. According to me these international film festivals are about different members and stars from various countries getting together,” Saif told the daily.

Newly appointed city police commissioner B G Jyothi Prakash Mirji played good Samaritan on Saturday by taking around 500 private school children and slum-dwellers to watch Royal Challengers Bangalore locking horns with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL T20 match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Private school teacher Elizabeth Robert said she was happy to witness the match along with her students. "We were intimated on Friday. Our school management contacted me and directed me to take the students to Saturday's IPL match," she said.

For Juanita Solomon, a class 9 student, the occasion was a memorable one. "I am a hardcore fan of Daniel Vettori. But to my sadness, after coming here I learnt that he flew back to his country following injury. However I will enjoy the match," she said, adding, "I am a cricket player and was selected to under 16 state team, but could not play the matches."

Speaking to the media, commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji said, "Everybody thinks it is a luxury to watch a cricket match in the stadium. Our department decided to take these underprivileged children to the stadium to witness the IPL match." According to him, 350 tickets were bought by the police department while the rest were sponsored by a private firm.

Lots of celebrities write blogs, but no one blogs quite like Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan who this week marked three years of writing in which he has often produced 1,000 words a day.

Bachchan celebrated the anniversary of his Internet outpourings with a characteristic array of long postings covering family news, spiritual thoughts and updates on his health, travel plans and sleep patterns.

Each Bachchan message attracts a huge readership and hundreds of comments contributed by adoring Indians who view him as a national father figure as well as an ageing screen star.

"Thank you for your presence and for your gratitude," Bachchan wrote to followers who congratulated him on his blog landmark.

"You have stood by me in rough weather and fair," he continued in inimitable style. "You have commented and encouraged, analysed and assessed, laughed and cried."

"This is indeed a superior class of people and I am proud to have been an initiator for all."

Bachchan, who is universally known as "the Big B", blogs about 5,000 words most weeks - a rate that would give him a total output of about 780,000 words since his first posting on April 18, 2008.

Almost every day, and often in the middle of the night, Bachchan - who admits to being an insomniac - writes in detail about his children, his dog "Shanouk", politics, philosophy and memories of his movie career.

As the patriarch of Bollywood's leading family, Bachchan's news is followed avidly, especially concerning his son Abhishek, a successful actor who is married to actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai.

As well as his "EF" (extended family), Bachchan's other favourite topics include cricket, his life on film shoots around the world, and current affairs ranging from Indian government issues to unrest in the Arab world.

Blogs often end with him saying his eyes are about to close with exhaustion.

"I know it's late - very late! But no matter what time it is I get disturbed and anxious until I put down my post for the day," he wrote in a piece uploaded at 3:30 am on Wednesday.

After 600 words in which he wondered whether he could post blogs while in his sleep, he complained of "black squares" in front of his eyes and signed off with: "Goodnight my dearest loves."

The physical exertion on Bachchan, 68, should not be underestimated.

He types all the words himself before posting them on the Internet, though secretaries are thought to help edit and spell-check the reams of often verbose copy.

Any mention in the blog of health problems or family disputes is immediately picked up by readers and soon reaches the national press and TV channels.

Last year fans were aghast when Bachchan blogged that he was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and needed regular medical care.

He tried to reassure followers that he was not at death's door, explaining that the disease was linked to a serious accident in which he ruptured his spleen on the set of the 1982 film "Coolie".

Bachchan, who is treated like royalty in movie-mad India, made his name in the 1970s as a handsome young man playing lead roles in Hindi blockbusters such as "Sholay" and "Deewaar".

His career later took a dive, but hosting the Indian version of TV game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? put him back in the spotlight and his blog has become a key part of his image as Bollywood's elder statesman.

"Thanks for writing on the net each single day without fail for three years... feel connected with you... it's a great feeling," wrote blog follower Madhu Jain this week.

And for those who still can't get enough of Bachchan, he has also developed into a keen Twitter fan, filing updates several times a day.

Siddharth is often seen with Deepika at city events, but at Shantanu-Nikhil's show, the 23-year-old came solo, although a few other Bollywood celebrities like Urmila Matondkar and Shamita Shetty occupied first row seats along with him.

'Our collection is called Divonics and it is inspired by the super sexy woman of today, who takes centerstage and mesmerises with her iconic presence,' said Shantanu.

Bollywood favourite Shah Rukh Khan is reportedly in line to make a return to TV with a role as the host of a brand new gameshow.

The actor is no stranger to the small screen having presented a handful of shows for the TV channel Star Plus Channel previously.

The new action packed show, Wipeout, has proved very popular in both the US and the UK amongst other countries and it’s hoped the fast and furious gameshow will be equally successful in India.

The programme follows a group of people in each episode as they battle it out on a giant assault course to finish in the fastest time. The competition also features a number of physical challenges where the contestants and pitted against each other. The winner receives a cash prize.Filming for the Indian version of Wipeout is due to take place in Argentina on the same assault course which is used every other country’s version of the reality show. The programme will be aired on NDTV Imagine, with Shah Rukh Khan tipped to present the new series.

At the beginning of his burgeoning film career, Indian star Emraan Hashmi was dubbed the 'serial kisser' owing to his choice of racy films - a thing of rarity in Bollywood. But just last week, the actor was made to wear a new tag - one based on his religion.

Recently, the actor was house hunting in Mumbai's Pali Hill area, a rich neighborhood that's in many ways akin to LA's Beverly Hills. When a housing society there denied the actor a home after he had already paid the initial token amount, Hashmi claimed it was because he was Muslim. He is not the first to make this allegation. It has been echoed by many from the Islamic community in the city. "Am I a criminal or a terrorist?" a visibly upset Hashmi asked publicly. Now, even as the housing society continues to cite his celebrity status (and not his religion) as their cause for refusal, the state minorities' commission has issued a notice to the building's managing committee.

The reactions to Hashmi's claim have been manifold. In a film industry largely dominated by Muslims, Hashmi got surprisingly little sympathy from his Bollywood brethren. India's reigning superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan came out to say that the fact that Muslim actors are at the top in India, is testament to the county's secular nature. A local politician even slammed Hashmi for making inflammatory remarks and instigating religious divide. And the blogger world in Pakistan is abuzz with this story, one of which is calling secular India a 'myth'.

But others from the Indian Islamic community assert that Hashmi's cry for change isn't a publicity ploy. Young urban Muslims like 26 year-old Anamara Baig looking to rent/buy a space in Mumbai are disoriented by the 'so-called cosmopolitan' city. "I knew that certain housing societies did not permit Muslims to live there, but when I experienced it first-hand this week, it made me sad. My real estate options are already cut by 50% because of my religion," says the program reviewer for an NGO , adding, "I love Mumbai, so I was justifying the discrimination to myself. But I won't take up for the city anymore."

And while most housing societies don't openly tell a buyer that religion will be an issue, brokers do. One, on the condition of anonymity, revealed, "They usually beat around the bush, cooking up other excuses as a guise. But religious discrimination, mostly targeted towards Muslims has been going on for years." In fact, this time last year, another Bollywood star, Saif Ali Khan told the media that because he knew about the phenomenon, he went straight to a Muslim builder "to avoid complications." Muslims in the Indian capital of New Delhi too, have said that what happened to the actor in Mumbai, is something they face on a daily basis.

Now, after days of hype and hoopla, the owner of the home has backtracked altogether, saying that he does not want to sell at all. Not to Hashmi, not to anyone. But the actor says it's no longer about the flat. "It is more of an ethical problem and not only about Muslims. People of other communities are facing a similar problem and any kind of discrimination should not be tolerated," he told a city broadsheet. Emraan Hashmi is showing no signs of backing down from the larger fight. “One actor is trying to associate his personal issue with a community. This will aggravate the distrust within society towards the minority community instead of creating sympathy for them, BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

He also said that by “blackmailing” society in the name of minority community some people were trying to break the religious harmony of Indian society.

Hashmi Friday accused a Mumbai housing society of refusing him permission to buy a flat because he is Muslim. Several Bollywood personalities have made similar complaints in the past.

"I'm planning to start production. I don't want to say much about it because every time I talk about these things, they never happen. It's my desire to make lovely films because I am an artist and a very creative person," she said.

"But filmmaking is not a joke...so many things are involved," she added.

The actress, who had her first stint with direction in 1992 with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Dil Aashna Hai", says she would want to be a liberal producer and not want to impose her ideas on the youth.

The film is based on the 9/11 Twin Towers attacks and it stars well-known actors like John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, and Irrfan Khan in the lead.

“New York was really one of the most special films for me. It is an amazing story and for me it was such a connected film. I really wanted to do the film to do well. I am so happy that it did. Also for director Mr. Kabir Khan; he is really one of the nicest people I know and I really wanted to work for him and I think we all are really happy that it worked….,” said Kaif on the occasion of launch of a jewellery range on Saturday.

Directed by Kabir Khan, ‘New York’ is made on a budget 4.6 million dollars and it revolves round the saga of three friends who live in the city before, during and after the 9/11 attacks.

“New York” puts the spotlight on that aspect of prejudice through the story of Samir (one of the three friends), an American of Indian origin who turns to terrorism after he is picked up by the FBI and brutally tortured for months only because he took some photographs of the twin towers for a school project.

Shah Rukh Khan can now call himself "doctor"

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan can now call himself "doctor" after being honoured in the United Kingdom for his contribution to arts and culture.

Bedfordshire University conferred the doctorate upon him at a ceremony in London on Friday night.

Khan said he aimed to use the award to help educate underprivileged children.

The actor, who has starred in dozens of films, already has his own waxwork at Madame Tussaud's and has previously been honoured in France and Malaysia.

'Top' award

Khan was able to joke about becoming a doctor after frequent surgery in the past few years, most recently on his shoulder five months ago.

"Interestingly my kids don't understand this doctorate and believe I will be awarded a stethoscope," he joked at the degree ceremony.

The star was awarded the doctorate at a top London hotel instead of on university premises north of London because of the summer break.

The university received his nomination from Routes 2 Roots, an NGO that works towards people-to-people contact across the subcontinent, especially India and Pakistan.

Accepting the honour, Khan said he had received numerous awards as an actor but being given an honorary doctorate was the top achievement.

The actor left one of Delhi's top schools with the best student award - but never finished a masters degree.

So how did he feel about receiving the honour?

"I get the feeling that I should further the cause of those underprivileged children who don't get the opportunity to educate themselves,'' he said, quickly adding that he should perhaps begin with his own children who are "highly uneducated as of now".

But even after getting an entry into Bollywood with a hit film like Mohabbatein, Preeti Jhangiani’s filmi career refused to take off. A slew of debacles followed and the actress settled into matrimony with actor Parvin Dabbas. Ask Preeti who she blames for her inability to make it in films and she says candidly, “I don’t see a point in analysing these things. I can give a variety of excuses like I don’t belong to a filmi family or that I didn’t have a Godfather but I won’t do that. I think every person comes with his or her destiny and I would just put it down to that.”

But now, Preeti promises to come back with not one but two new releases. “I’ve just finished shooting for As The River Flows directed by Bidyut Kotoky. It’s set in Assam and it’s about common people getting caught in the crossfire between the government and terrorists,” she says. Preeti plays a Bengali newspaper editor in this one and in Mono, which is going to be shot completely in London, the actress gets to don five avatars. “That’s because I play an actress who plays five different characters. This is by far the most challenging thing I’ve done,” she adds.

Although Preeti admits that she is not being offered mainstream roles — which she is keen to do — she says that both the films she’s doing are hardcore commercial movies. Is she also worried that the growing competition (Read: Deepika, Asin, Anushka etc) will mean lack of roles for her? “There was competition even when I entered Bollywood, so that doesn’t bother me. I think I have a lot to offer and hopefully, somebody will put their faith in me too. I agree I haven’t reached where I wanted to in my career but thankfully, age is on my side,” she says, putting to rest the pregnancy rumours that have been doing the rounds of late.

She laughs, “It’s ridiculous. Just because I’m married doesn’t mean I’m pregnant too. I want to start my career now, not end it!”

Today, she is closeted in her vanity van at N. D. Studio in Karjat with make-up artist, Ojas. She is busy putting on a face, which to me seems so unnecessary! Earlier, fresh countenanced, tired-eyed but oh so beautiful, she had made flash decisions on gowns (no saris); colours (out with that dull mauve) and silhouettes. The world's most beautiful woman (so says Julia Roberts!) standing there in black tights and silver-and-white tee, could have slipped into anything and looked like a million bucks. She is small, slim and graveeyed and I remember reading that these, her most outstanding feature, have been donated already to science. She was not in the best of moods, struggling to control diva-esque tendencies - probably triggered by yet another unnecessary controversy, this time at Cannes, hanging over her head like a cloud of bad hair. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is ready to shoot but only on her own terms. And, no, she has too much on her mind today to commit to a chat.

The wind blows dry and hot on director Vipul Shah's set of Action Replay, featuring a re-creation of South Bombay in the hip 1970s. Being India's foremost leading lady is hard work. Juggling schedules, make-up, costumes, cover shoot, camera roll - and they haven't even started yet; the shoot scheduled to finish at 5 a.m. and lead Akshay Kumar, nowhere in sight. (And, did I mention, there's no time here for an interview!) I realize later, when she does manage to squeeze in a conversation, that the country's most glamorous celebrity works her trim butt off - and she truly believes in what she is doing. And this could be key to understanding Aishwarya and her reality. She is an idea, a dream that somehow fits into society's fantasies about itself. But it is hard to overestimate her significance in the reels of Bollywood culture. She is famous and not just in this country, of all women perhaps only less so than Sonia Gandhi herself and daughter Priyanka.

Interviewing Aishwarya is like prying open a floodgate. Pinned down another day, she is ready to give it her all, while firmly guarding her privacy. "Each year I am thinking it (her schedule) will ease up. It is the choices I make and the filmmakers I work with who are extremely passionate about their craft, demanding, in a positive way, in terms of detailing, in terms of preparation, plans and discussions prior to going ahead with filming...that involves a lot of participation which I enjoy the most...along with the companies I am involved with in terms of endorsements...." By all accounts, the former model and Miss World (1994) today commands a price of Rs 6 crore a film, the highest paid to any female actor in Bollywood and takes home around Rs 1 billion from advertising assignments annually. Certainly makes it 'worth it'.

There is a collective intake of breath as she makes an entry in a clinging red Shahab Durazi gown with large shoulder bow, looking for all the world like a girl on her prom night out, all wrapped up and ready to go. I notice a photographer's assistant roll his eyes, blown away by her raw appeal. She is electric before the camera, her obvious fatigue dispelled by the lens. She trips, she turns, she pouts and through it all she chatters with celebrity cameraman, Atul Kasbekar. From Marathi jokes to football scores and cricket, she is game for it all. New Delhi: Braving the heat, hundreds of onlookers thronged the capital's Connaught Place area Thursday to catch a glimpse of Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who came to launch a new boutique of Swiss watch brand Tissot and its new range of watches.
The pressure of the crowd, who waited for almost an hour in the extreme heat to see the 23-year-old actress, was so much that even the elaborate flower decorations outside the store, came off the poles.

"I got to know that Deepika is coming to this shop. So I was waiting to catch a glimpse of her, but when she arrived the place got so jam-packed that I could not even see her face," said 18-year-old Anushka, who stood outside the store with two of her friends.

The crowd nearly broke into a stampede when the actress, wearing a short green dress, stepped in. However, neither few of the media persons inside the store nor most of the fans outside could see her well.

"I am here to cover the event but for a minute I thought that I would get crushed or suffocated due to the crowd," said a news channel reporter.

Deepika, who did not stay at the venue for more than 20 minutes, spoke about the new collection Sea-Touch by Tissot besides taking a few questions about her forthcoming film "Love Aaj Kal".

"'Love Aaj Kal' is an out and out romantic film. It talks about relations of the earlier times and relationships today. It talks of love that used to be and love that is today. It is a complete family film. I just hope that it does well since it is a great film and very special to me," she said.

"Love Aaj Kal" also stars Saif Ali Khan and has been directed by Imtiaz Ali of "Jab We Met" fame.

Complainant Khalid Babu Querishi alleged that in the July issue of the Time and Style magazine, Shah Rukh had used objectionable language against the Prophet which is unacceptable," George said.

The case was registered under section 295-a (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious sentiments) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common interest) of IPC.

Not knowing a single word of the Quran, Bollywood hero John Abraham, a Parsi, studied the holy book in a translation to prepare himself to play an NRI Muslim in Kabir Khan's "New York".

"It's part of my larger determination to prepare myself completely for a part. Whether it was 'New York' or now Abbas Tyrewala's film, I'm taking time off to prepare for the film and the character. The audience today understands an honest film. That's what I want to give," said Abraham.

Earlier John learnt to play the flute, the Sanskrit language and how to wear a dhoti to give his character, Narayan, conviction in Oscar-nominated " Water ", a film about the plight of widows in pre-Independence India.

"I only want to do roles that take me out of my comfort zone. Through my characters and performances, I want to make people comfortable with what makes me uncomfortable as a human being and an Indian," said Abraham, who believes that an actor has to break through his own stereotypes.

He tried to break his image by doing films like " Water ", " No Smoking " and " Kabul Express ".

Says one of Abraham's close friends of "New York": "He went very deep into the film's theme of Islamic isolation. When he shot ' Kabul Express ' with Kabir Khan in Afghanistan, John spoke to people....and began to understand the concept of jehad . He understood how dangerous it is to fight for a cause without knowing the history of that cause.

"He went on the net, found legitimate and proper translations of the Quran. He learnt the proper pronunciations of words in the Quran", the friend said.

In " New York ", Abraham plays a character who is wrongly detained in the US for terrorism.

"John researched rigorously on Islam and its various aspects. His character in ' New York ' is wrongly detained for terrorism. John based his character on three such real-life Muslims taken into custody in the US for wrongs they hadn't committed.

"John and Kabir Khan amalgamated the cases of three such unfortunate people to create John's character. He actually lived, breathed, slept and wept like someone who had been wrongly ostracized," said the friend.

So traumatized was the actor by the experience that he went into a complete shell in Philadelphia, where "New York" was shot.

"He wouldn't talk to people. He was completely in his own shell. It was a life-changing experience. Today, John knows what it feels to be a Muslim and a target of ceaseless suspicion and hostility in the US.

"He also empathizes closely with the issue of Indian students being racially abused in Australia after playing an Indian abused in 'New York'. He understands the isolation of the minority. To a large extent, John has been a part of a minority from his birth," said the friend.

Releasing June 26, the film also stars Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan.

Mumbai: At the glittering IIFA award ceremony at The Venetian, perhaps the biggest and most opulent hotel in Macau, the Bachchans dominated proceedings. While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked away with two awards -- Global Indian and Actress of the Decade, the show, that went on till almost three in the morning, was dotted with performances by Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan, besides Sonam Kapoor, Govinda and Sushmita Sen.

But the highlight of the event was when Amitabh Bachchan presented the Lifetime Achievement award to Rajesh Khanna. The two actors were considered not on talking terms for the longest time, after Amitabh took over as the Bollywood's biggest superstar. It was the first time in years that the two have even shared the stage together.

While there were three anchors -- Boman Irani, Ritesh Deshmukh and Lara Dutta --Boman stole the show with his excellent imitation of Anil Kapoor's pre-and-post Slumdog Millionaire phase. Boman also got the stars to play antakshari. Hrithik Roshan (who won Best Actor for Jodhaa Akbar) surprised everyone with his enthusiastic rendition of an old hit, 'Tere jaisa yaar kahaan, kahaan aisa yaarana..."

Shah Rukh Khan’s first Don film, Don - The Chase Begins Again, directed by Farhan Akhtar, was a remake of the blockbuster 1978 film, Don. The film was released in India on October 20, 2006 and it was also simultaneously released internationally.

It received a very good response worldwide, and collected over Rs. 30 crores in India in its first week itself. The script of the previous film was written by Akhtar's father, Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan.

The film stars Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Ishaa Koppikar and Kareena Kapoor in a guest appearance. Eighty percent of the movie was shot in Malaysia, and was filmed around the tropical Langkawi island as well as the Petronas Twin Towers and the Jalan Masjid India area, which is the 'little India' of Kuala Lumpur.

Akshay Kumar was offered for the role of Jasjit but he rejected saying he might have accepted if he was offered the part of Don. Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra underwent special martial arts training for their roles in the movie.

The film was selected to be screened at the Berlin Film Festival. Critical reaction was mixed, with most reviews tilted towards the positive. It was a huge commercial success though.

Rajeev Masand: You didn't grow up wanting to be an actress, did you? I read somewhere that you were studying to be a doctor in Shimla and the acting ambitions came much later. Do you wonder sometimes how your life would have turned out had you pursued your education and never moved to Mumbai?

Kangana Ranaut: I never go into the 'what ifs'. This is because maybe I never had the time to think. Life has moved very fast for me like when I was 16 I decided to do something different. At that point my family did not support me because they were worried about me. I was so young and restless then. After that things went really fast for me. I was completely smitten by the world of theater and modeling. I was like a child lost in a candy shop.

Rajeev Masand: You made a big impression with your first film Gangster. And then with Woh Lamhe you pretty much solidified your reputation. Would you say that you learnt acting from watching movies?

Kangana Ranaut: No, I think my idea of acting got cleared while I was doing theatre. Like for an example, the director of Slumdog Millionaire had said that he could not find one ordinary looking guy in India for the main role. He had to import him from London. So when a girl goes for an audition, she thinks that being an actress is all about fake eyelashes, pouting or being a sex object. They really don't know what it is being an actress. I remember going for Gangster's audition without makeup. I told Anurag (Kashyap) that you will give me the character to play so you tell me what clothes to wear or how to look.

"Next Generation: Asia Class of 2009", a journal by the trade bible which is featuring Asia's new generation in filmmaking for the first time has selected Sonam as the only Indian representative.

Sonam, who celebrates her 24th birthday on Tuesday is thrilled with the news. "Yes, it is pleasing to be recognized by Hollywood so early in my career, but my success is due to the enormous faith that the Indian film industry has placed in me and the great love that I have been lucky to get from my audiences," Sonam said in a statement.

The article about "the next generation of leaders in the rapidly evolving Asian entertainment sector" prominently features Sonam and the actress has also been presented with a certificate signed by Eric Mika, the publisher of Hollywood Reporter.

But Sonam is in no hurry to migrate to Hollywood.

"My heart is in India, and the films we make here can stand comparison with those made anywhere in the world, including Hollywood," the actress said.

"So if and when there is an offer from the West, I will judge it on the same criteria that I choose scripts - whether I believe in the story, the project and the people involved or not; and not just because it has come from Hollywood," Sonam added.

'Kal Kissne Dekha'the first major release after the end of the two-month

New Delhi (PTI): With 'Kal Kissne Dekha' slated to become the first major release after the end of the two-month long deadlock between producers and multiplex owners, newcomer Jackky Bhagnani hopes to cash-in on the hunger of the die-hard cinelovers.

"I feel God is by my side as my film will be the first movie to release from the united forum and with the strong movie watching culture that we have here it is definitely going to work in our favour. As a newcomer I couldn't have asked for a better release date," Jackky told PTI in an interview.

The film, which has been directed by 'Bhootnath' fame Vivek Sharma, was to release on May 29 but it postponed due to the stand-off between multiplexes and Bollywood producers-distributors over profit sharing issue. It will now release on June 12.

"We postponed the release as it looked like the strike would end soon. If the film releases in multiplexes, I reach more people, which is good for a new actor like me," Jackky says.

The debutant says he is part nervous and part excited as the release date of the film approaches.

"I have worked hard for this film and I am very happy and excited that it is finally releasing but I feel nervous also. It is a feeling and emotion difficult for me to describe," he says.

A reality television show based on ancient Hindu rituals is aiming to strike a blow against India’s tradition of arranged marriages.

Rakhi Sawant, a Bollywood dancer, actress and television host, has refused a union brokered by her parents. Instead, she has promised to find the perfect man herself — with the aid of a prime time TV series.

Rakhi Ka Swayamvar (Rakhi’s Search for a Husband) has attracted more than 12,500 aspirant grooms from across the subcontinent. The show is due to begin later this month but the outspoken celebrity’s promise to marry on air has already whipped up controversy in what remains a rigidly conservative country.

The show’s producers admit to being shocked when Ms Sawant first pitched the idea for the show — but they deny being part of a stunt designed purely to win ratings.

Rather, they insist, the message is one of female empowerment.

The series will be based on the ancient but now largely neglected practice of swayamvara, where a young woman picks a husband for herself from a group of hopeful suitors, often by putting them through a series of tests.

The most famous example appears in the Ramayana, the 2,500-year-old Sanskrit epic, with Ram, the Hindu god, chosen as a husband by the heroine Sita after he wins a trial of strength by bending the bow of Lord Shiva.

A recent survey by the International Institute for Population Sciences found that 95 per cent of marriages in India today are arranged by the families of the bride and groom. More than 70 per cent of married women between the ages of 15 and 24 said that they were never asked their views on their future husband before their wedding. About a quarter said that their first sexual experience within marriage was forced.

“Over the past 500 years girls in India have lost the right to ask questions about who they marry,” Shailja Kejriwal of NDTV Imagine, the channel that has created Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, said. “I really hope this series, which is all about a strong woman choosing her own husband, will address that. It’s about empowerment.”

Conservative Hindus, who have vehemently opposed the infiltration of Western cultural ideas into India, are almost certain to object.

A spokesman for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, India’s most powerful hardline Hindu group, made plain his disapproval of the series. “We prefer arranged marriages,” he told The Times. “They are part of an old and good tradition.”

For her part, 30-year-old Ms Sawant has said that she is looking for a husband who combines the best attributes of Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan — three hugely wealthy Bollywood superstars.

The producers admit that it probably rules out the thousands of would-be husbands who have applied to appear on the show from India’s poor rural villages.

“We have to be realistic,” Ms Kejriwal said. “The series will look for a compatible husband. I can’t see a celebrity like Rakhi marrying somebody from a village. That would be foolish.” The series’ creators are keeping the details of the selection methods secret, but say that they will be adapted from “ancient Vedic practices” — similar to those outlined in the Ramayana.

The audience will be asked to vote for a winner, but Ms Sawant will make the final decision on whom she marries, helped by friends, family and a psychologist. Contestants are now being vetted, with background checks being run on each man’s health and wealth.

Explaining how the idea came to her, Ms Sawant said: “I am a cultured Indian woman with good values and I have reached a stage where I need a companion with whom I can share my love, joys, sorrows and success.

“I want to solemnise my marriage in the presence of all my fans who have been supportive of me throughout — and what better way than getting married on national television?”

Aamir Khan, who has gone through the script, has reportedly expressed keen interest in playing the lead role of a lunatic, Bishan Singh, though he is yet to sign on the dotted lines.

"I will be speaking to Kate Winslet for the role of Dr. Sophie (the female protagonist) in the movie after Cannes Film Festival ends. I want to finalize the casting," Nalin said.

MUMBAI : Bollywood star Akshay Kumar was arrested on Monday on suspicion of obscene behaviour during a Mumbai fashion show in March.

A complaint had been lodged against the "Padmashri" actor and his wife, Twinkle Khanna, after he strutted down the catwalk at Lakme Fashion Week, stopped in front of his wife who was seated in the audience, and asked her to undo his trousers. Kumar was a brand ambassador for Levi's "Unbuttoned" range.

Kumar, 41, has apologised for his actions and surrendered himself to the police after he returned to India after filming abroad. His wife was arrested and bailed last month.

"He was arrested under section 294 of Indian Penal Code and was given bail," assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahdadi told AFP.
