Katrina Kaif still remains Akshay Kumar’s numero uno choice as co-star.

Of all the beautiful babes in Bollywood, Katrina Kaif still remains Akshay Kumar’s numero uno choice as co-star.

Though Katrina is in the top league of Bollywood actresses today, she is seldom credited for it. Often we hear rants about how Katrina struck fame by cashing in on the popularity of a crowd-puller like Akshay Kumar .

But, may be, it worked the other way round too. That Akshay while being the star to which Kat hitched her wagon also benefited from her as a co-star. How otherwise could one explain Akshay’s failed jodis with the likes of Deepika Padukone and Ayesha Takia in the last two of his releases – Chandni Chowk To China and 8x10 Tasveer respectively.

Of course, today we know that Katrina Kaif is the film’s heroine and has already shot one schedule of the film and is currently filming its second schedule in Singapore. But she may not have landed the role if Akshay hadn’t recommended her to Priyadarshan.

The director confirms that Katrina was signed for ‘De Dana Dan’ after Akshay’s recommendation. He says he’s happy to have made that choice because, in his words, Akshay and Katrina share a “terrific chemistry on screen”.

Well, we all know that.

Mallika Sherawat get “Arts Award” in New York

fter becoming the first Bollywood celebrity to have a milkshake named after her at the hotspot ‘Millions of Milkshakes’ in Hollywood city, Mallika Sherawat has now become the latest recipient of the prestigious “Arts Award” in New York.

The sexy actress was honoured recently for her unparalleled contributions to and influence with the Indian diaspora.

The event was organised by Honorable Jerramiah Healy, the Mayor of Jersey City and the New Jersey co-chair of President Barack Obama's primary campaign to honor the Indian community and its contributions to the United States.

Out of America's 100 largest cities, Jersey City has one of the largest percentages of South Asians. Area politicians, business persons, and members of the press attended the event.

As a congressional honoree, U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone (father of the India Caucus in the U.S. Congress), among others, also graced the event with his presence. The host of the event was JCHA Commissioner Raj Mukherji (the youngest commissioner in city history to serve the Housing Authority).From:www.indiaglitz.com

The Americans cannot get enough of our Mallika Sherawat

And no, we don’t mean the cold beverage made with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and topped with chocolate sauce and whipped cream that’s named after the hot Bollywood actress and is available at ‘Millions of Milkshakes’ in west Hollywood.

Though, foodies who have greedily gulped it down, say wickedly that the Mallika Milkshake is as sinful as they imagine the real item to be! Not even Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton, who share the dubious distinction of having milkshakes named after them at this Hollywood hotspot, have got such rave reviews.

But never mind milkshakes in America, tattlers are buzzing about recognition and honour coming Mallika’s way just like that in the US.

On Friday, she was presented a prestigious Arts Awards by the Mayor of Jersey City for her “unparalleled contributions to and influence on the Indian diaspora”. The event was organised to honour the Indian community and its contributions to the United States.

Jersey City has a large population of South Asians. Apparently politicians, business persons, and members of the press attended the event to get a closer glimpse of Mallika. Several hundred Indians, too, who complain that they never get enough of the actress on screen. Maybe it’s high time Bollywood reckonised that as well.From:timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Bollywood's actress Priyanka Chopra's actual love interest continues.

Mumbai (IANS): She has been linked with three actors - Hurman S. Baweja, Shahid Kapur and Hollywood star Gerard Butler of "300" fame - all within a span of one year, but the mystery behind Bollywood's svelte actress Priyanka Chopra's actual love interest continues.

The rumour mills started working overtime after Butler, whom she met at the launch of the Atlantis hotel in Dubai last year, was quoted as saying in a leading daily: "I don't mind getting married to an Indian girl. Too bad Priyanka already has a boyfriend".

Now, who that boyfriend is, remains to be known.

Though rumours of a romantic liaison between Shahid and Priyanka have been in the grapevine lately after their joint appearance at filmmaker Tarun Mansukhani's birthday party in Mumbai last week, neither has confirmed the development.

The two will be seen together in Vishal Bharadwaj's "Kaminay".

"Priyanka has always maintained silence on her private affairs. Till date, she has never gone public about her personal life and she will continue to do so," a source close to the actress told IANS.

Even when news of her affair with her "Love Story 2050" co-star Hurman was doing the rounds, Priyanka remained politically correct. While Hurman was very vocal about their relationship as well as their break-up, the supermodel-turned-actress chose not to speak about it.

Now, the news about the friendship between Priyanka and Butler, who is currently in Jaipur, is raising eyebrows.

But the source clarifies: "He (Butler) is in Jaipur with four of his friends as part of an India tour.

"He came to Jaipur and knew that Priyanka was shooting and staying at Shiv Vilas for her film 'What's Your Rashee?'. So he came to the sets to meet her as they are good friends and to see what an Indian film shoot looks like. He also met all important people on the sets and was also introduced to Ashutosh (Gowariker) and Hurman. Priyanka and him are just friends only," the source said.

Butler, who played the role of King Spartan in "300", has also been linked to former "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston, which he has denied.

Amir Khan scored a patient half-century

Amir Khan scored a patient half-century to lead the Yannick Ottley XI to a 21-run victory over the Nicholas Alexis XI in the BGTT Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Quadrangular Under-19 Tournament at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva yesterday.

Khan scored 50 as Ottley's XI were dismissed for 195, which was enough to ensure the win.

Qadir Shah gave the Alexis XI a good start, removing opener Aaron Alfred for four in the second over with the score on 13, but skipper Yannick Ottley and Amir Khan steadied the ship, taking the total past the 100-run mark.

The pair faced 26 overs to post a partnership worth 93 runs, with Khan bringing up his 50 after 99 balls and 118 minutes at the crease.

It included four fours and a six and after getting to the milestone, Khan was bowled by Terrence Ramsaroop to open the flood gates.

Three overs later, with the score on 115, Ottley, who faced 98 balls for his 41, sent a catch to Vashisht Maraj off the bowling of Rampersad.

With the batsmen trying to score quickly, Derone Davis came into the attack to remove wicket-keeper Clayton Wallace, bowled for a duck, and Javed Boodram, brilliantly caught and bowled, after a few juggles, for six with the score on 191. Akeil Hosein, who had compiled 29 runs from 46 balls, was then bowled by Shah in the last over, followed by Aneil Harrypersad in similar fashion off the penultimate ball of the innings.

When the Alexis XI batted, Savion Lara top-scored with 40 but that was not enough as Harrypersad took three for 29 to finish the job for the Ottley XI.

In yesterday's other match at Greig Street Recreation Ground, Marcelle Jones and Darron Beekah, along with their skipper Yannic Cariah, almost bowed their team to victory after they posted a low total of 99.

Jones took four for 33, while the skipper had two for 21 as the Akiel Cooper XI barely reached their target with three wickets in hand.

The chase was made even more difficult with Beekah bowling economically, taking one for five off eight overs, but it was not enough to stave off defeat.

John Abraham gear up to play cricket

Cricket Fever has caught on big time thanks to the on-going IPL frenzy and hence it comes as no surprise to see some Bollywood filmmakers cashing in on the popularity of the sport which is almost a religion in India.

UTV Motion Pictures' forthcoming film Hook Ya Crook is one such film that has cricket as the backdrop. The film, directed by the David Dhawan, has John Abraham, Genelia D'souza, Kay Kay Menon and Shreyas Talpade in lead roles. The film is set in a prison and revolves around a cricket match played among the inmates.

With David at the helm of things, this one promises to be a complete entertainer. Also it would be interesting to see the fresh pairing of John and Genelia for the first time on the big screen. Majority of the film has been shot at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. The supporting cast includes talented actors like Pavan Malhotra, Murli Sharma, Krishna and Sharad Kapoor (who would be seen making a comeback of sorts after a really long time).

John who impressed one and all with his football skills in Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal will showcase his cricket skills this time in Hook Ya Crook. If the buzz is to be believed, then John's good friend and captain of the Indian Cricket Team M.S. Dhoni is also slated to make a guest appearance in this film. With such an impressive star cast and an interesting premise, Hook Ya Crook is certainly among the most awaited films of this year.

Bollywood's young heart throbs couple is going

t seems the relationship between Bollywood's young heart throbs couple is going through tough times. But being good actors, they are not making it visible on their cute faces. We are talking about Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.

A close pal of the couple reveals, "Last week Deepika was to join Ranbir for going to Dostana director Tarun Mansukhani's birthday party at late night. Since she got stuck due to her work commitments (shooting of Excel Entertainment's Kartik Calling Kartik), Ranbir told her he would go alone to the party. But despite telling her so, he didn't go their. Instead he chose to attend another party that had his debut film Saawariya heroine Sonam Kapoor and her good friend Kunal Kapoor.

“He didn't tell this to Deepika who was well under the impression for days that he was at Tarun's party. The birthday party saw new love birds Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra making an entry and exit together publicly for the first time. John Abraham and Bipasha Basu too came in for the bash. When Deepika came to know about Ranbir's lie, it is learnt that she lambasted him over the phone while he kept giving her excuses such as how it was all a last minute change in his plan etc."

Now when we encountered Deepika at the latest Filmfare magazine issue launch and asked her about any strains in relationship happening between her and Ranbir, she questioned us back with a smile, "Do I appear hassled to you?"

Well certainly not Deepika but it is also true that you are a very fine actress. Just days back, Ranbir's sister Riddhima told to a news channel journo on TV that she doesn't think Deepika is Ranbir's girlfriend and that she knows Deepika only as one of his good friends. With news of Ranbir striking great rapport on and off the sets with his Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani co-star Katrina Kaif, we won't be left wondering when Deepika also starts losing sleep just like Salman Khan is over his partner.

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor have cancelled their plans

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor have cancelled their plans for a summer holiday but would rather shoot their upcoming film in New York.

The star couple was initially slated to go on a brief holiday to a destination that was kept secret by Saif. But now, their vacation has apparently been cancelled because director Rensil D'Silva wants them to shoot for the next schedule of his tentatively titled film Jihad in New York.

In fact, the lovers would be so busy shooting the film in the US that they won’t be able to catch up any IPL matches at the ongoing tournament in South Africa.

Produced by Karan Johar , ‘Jihaad’ is a love story woven around the subject of terrorism. It’s the first film where the couple is romantically paired with each other. They worked together in Tashan but Kareena was paired with Akshay and not Saif in the film.

The couple will also be seen together in Saif’s home production Agent Vinod .

Meanwhile, on her trip to the US, Kareena is carrying along the script of ‘No one killed Jessica’ which she will read and give a final word to director Rajkumar Gupta (director of Aamir ) who wants to cast Kareena in one of the two principal roles in his film on the murder of Delhi model Jessica Lal.

Saif Ali Khan just recently visited Aamir Khan

Saif Ali Khan just recently visited Aamir Khan on the sets of his film 3 Idiots in Mumbai. Sources claim, the Chote Nawab who has now turned a producer is trying to safeguard his interest but since Love Aaj Kal, which is scheduled for a June end release. is his first production he doesn’t want it to get affected by the dispute.

Sources further revealed, “Aamir was pleasantly surprised when Saif visited him as Kareena Kapoor who is also acting in the film wasn’t shooting that day. But Aamir then made time for Saif that afternoon during lunch and talked to him about the current status on the issue and the stand they are likely to take in the future. The meeting was said to be highly informative for Saif who left the venue a bit more assured and in hope that things sort out before his film releases.”

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played mediator

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played mediator when she convinced her husband Abhishek to play the lead opposite her in Kandokondein, director Rajeev Menon’s next film. However, it didn’t take her long to go back on her word and betray the director as soon as another opportunity came along.

It’s not a hidden fact that Ash wants to concentrate on movies with her husband when it comes to Bollywood, and she is in the process of completing Ravan with Mani Ratnam.

She was bowled over by Menon’s script and asked Abhishek to sign on for the film. Meanwhile, upcoming director Abhinay Deo, who is directing Aamir Khan produced Delhi Belly, approached the Bachchan couple for his next film. Since Deo is a name to look out for, Abhishek and Aishwarya instantly gave him their nod of approval. Their dates, which were initially given to Menon were shifted to Deo’s film. Menon is still reeling under what has happened as his entire project is now caught in a rut.

Leading Bollywood heroines such as Tabu

Mumbai, April 20: In a star crazed B-town, youth has its own appeal! With leading Bollywood heroines such as Tabu, Rani Mukerji, Kajol struggling to find decent roles, it is evident that the shelf life of B-town beauties in on a steep decline.

Actresses who hit the silver screen in 90’s like Priety Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai are fast fading to oblivion. Talking about this ubiquitously unique phenomenon to a newspaper, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said, “Even in Hollywood Julia Roberts is feeling the tremors of the end. Whether you’re a streetwalker, an actor or in any other glamorous profession, there is a premium on youth. One can’t flinch away from the fact that an actor has a limited shelf life; and in this consumerist age where society is youth-obsessed, there is no place for people beyond a particular age. Even a child in an average school wants his mother to look like the young, television mother in a soap opera or a television commercial. Age controls the days and the nights of the entertainment world.”

Indeed, in Bollywood, the young guns rule the roost. It is a fact that Aishwarya lost jewelry deal, doll and a bath soap endorsement to petite Katrina Kaif. With Priyanka and Kareena becoming the new hot property of B-town, Akshay’s teaming up with young Jiah Khan, Ajay Devgan and Salman vying for Asin, Shahrukh sizzling with Deepika, Shahid yearning to romance Genelia and Abhishek making a cute pair with Sonam; Bollywood is undergoing a sea change where 90’s beauties are struggling to find their rhythm.

According to writer Vindo Mirani, “They’re (90’s actresses such as Priety Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai ) considered for the occasional meaty role, but with the production numbers having gone down, the roles have dried up for the older lot. The heroes well into their 40s invariably ask their producers to get them younger heroines.’’ A filmmaker quipped “In Bollywood, the heroines are absolutely inter-changeable; switching Deepika with Katrina makes no difference to a project.

Kareena to team up with Imtiaz again!

Kareena Kapoor and Imtiaz Ali are all set to recreate the magic of Jab We Met by teaming up together in a snack ad.

After the success of Jab..., Bebo was keen on working with Imtiaz Ali again, but the director chose Deepika instead in Love Aaj Kal.

According to sources, Kareena insisted that Imtiaz should direct her in the ad as she was "dying" to work with the director.

A source has revealed the concept of the ad. "The concept is much like the story of Jab We Met. Bebo will be wearing ethnic salwar-suits and would run through the sarson ka khets." Print Out from: www.hindustantimes.com

Riddhima denies Ranbir-Deepika relationship

Days after Ranbir Kaboor reportedly criticised Deepika’s dress sense in public and mother Neetu Singh passed her off as just a friend, it’s now the hero’s sister, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, who refuses to acknowledge the couple. “Ranbir and Deepika are young, talented people and are quite poised and charming,” says Riddhima.

When questioned about whether she accepts the two as more than friends, Riddhima’s first reaction was to avoid the question. On being prodded, she relents and says, “They make a good on-screen pair and their chemistry is fine.” But what about their off-screen romance? “I’ve never seen them together in that sense, so I don’t go by the media reports. Moreover, I stay in Delhi and don’t want to comment on this. However, if Ranbir chooses to do something, we’re with him. He’s very hard-working and wants to concentrate on his work,” she replies.
Riddhima’s also all praise for cousin Kareena Kapoor, the current rage in Bollywood. “She’s brilliant. The Kapoors never went anywhere — it’s just the younger generation, including Kareena and Ranbir, who’s making it big in the industry and taking the lineage forward,” she says.

Riddhima, who designs clothes and was recently appointed brand ambassador for a national chain of skin care clinics, however, is determined to stay away from Bollywood. “I’m very happy about my mother making a comeback. As far as I’m concerned, I would never consider making an appearance even if it’s a home production. I will not be doing films,” confirms Riddhima.

Bipasha Basu, actor: I love gold jewellery

Bipasha Basu, actor: I love gold jewellery. In fact, Bappi da wears such lovely gold jewellery; it’s full of these little Gods. I think gold looks chic and traditional both and makes for a great investment.

Whether it is a tiny gold Ganapati clasping a weathered rudraksh, maharani necklace gifted to you on your wedding day by your grandmother or simply the nuggets you procured during your Dubai trip, gold holds an everlasting appeal and a viable monetary value.

As the bears and bulls play hookie and the realty pie staggers to retain a sustainable foothold, the yellow metal beckons every woman and her cup runneth over.

Meera Mahadevia, accessories designer: I believe gold lasts forever. Buying gold is considered auspicious in our culture as well. In my mind there is nothing that surpasses the magic and appeal of traditional jewellery for a woman. It lights up every occasion. In times like this it makes sense to invest in the yellow metal. In fact I have brought in 24K gold as embellishment in my Rajwada collection of jewelled totes, as a celebration of life. There is a gold Ganesha in all our offices.

Poonam Soni, jewellery designer: Gold is a great buy during these days. You can never lose with it.

Krashani Sivamani, entrepreneur: My husband regards gold as an auspicious inclusion around every festival. Gold simply never goes out of style.

SALUTING A HERO By Rekha Dixit

The curtains opened, and there was Sachin Tendulkar, helmet in one hand and bat in the other, looking heavenwards. Beside him stood Sachin Tendulkar, in the same iconic pose. The only difference between the two Sachins was the recent stubble on the face of one. "Thank God he doesn't breathe," said this Sachin, and we knew that the clean-shaven one was his wax replica, painstakingly crafted by Madame Tussaud's team of 20 artisans over four long months.

Coming face-to-face with a three-dimensional replica of yourself "can be an unnerving experience," says Liz Edwards, spokesperson for Madame Tussauds. Sachin, introduced to his wax replica only moments before the public launch, didn't really have much time to compose himself.

For India, Sachin's waxwork is important. He's the first sport star from the country to be chosen by the 200-year-old tourist attraction, and only the fifth contemporary Indian after Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, to find a home under that famous green dome in London's Baker Street.
But that is not all. It was the first figure that was unveiled outside a Madame Tussaud's attraction. The organisers wanted to cash in on the IPL craze, which could be the reason why the statue was unveiled in Mumbai. It will be placed in the museum in London later in April, around the time when Sachin celebrates his 36th birthday.

"We launch eight new personalities to our attraction every year," said Liz. Sachin is in the company of newcomers Barack Obama, Louis Hamilton, the new Mayor of London and a new Britney Spears.
"Sachin is a legend after becoming the highest scoring Test cricketer. And visitors have been clamouring to see his figure," said Liz.
"We try for a snapshot in time, because people are constantly changing their looks. The Queen, for instance, has had four sittings with us over the years," Liz explained.

It takes four months to create a waxwork, starting with the sittings, where hundreds of pictures are taken. The hair is ethically sourced and each strand inserted individually. To get the right skin tone, 20 layers of acrylic paint are applied in a stippled fashion. Thin red silk is used to give the capillary tone to the eyes.
Despite all this, the result is not always satisfactory. "When Aishwarya's figure was unveiled, we realised it wasn't a perfect match, the complexion specially. With non-UK celebrities, we cannot get them over mid way through production for a check," admitted Liz.

The famous rivalry between the two Khans

The famous rivalry between the two Khans seems to have settled down for the time being and they have united for the cause of the industry, and coinciding with it another incident has happened. The cola wars between the Khans have also come to an end. Shah Rukh Khan is now a brand ambassador for Sprite, the company which is owned by Coca Cola, and it has been represented by Aamir Khan for quite a long time. Given a choice, probably Shah Rukh Khan might not have left Pepsi, but the Indian Premier League seems to have precipitated the issue. His team Kolkata Knight Riders is now sponsored by Sprite, and in such a scenario it would not have been possible for him to endorse another brand.

CHECK OUT: SRK chooses his six Angels

For a change in the commercial of Sprite that has been released, Shah Rukh Khan is seen along with his team mates of Kolkata Knight Riders and it is one of the firsts for Shah Rukh Khan as till the time Shah Rukh Khan was representing Pepsi, the campaign used to revolve around him, while with Sprite the narrative has changed. Now he is a part of thematic commercial, which is a specialty of nearly all the Coca Cola campaigns that Aamir Khan has been associated with. It is owing to the adoption of theme that Coke's campaign brings into its ambit food, celebration and other themes, more so cricket, packaging it as a complete campaign. Shah Rukh Khan has not been a part of this collective package till his association with Pepsi.

It would be interesting to watch whether Shah Rukh Khan be roping in his protegees as well, i.e. whether Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone also become a part of the Coke campaign, now that Shah Rukh Khan has declared his following for Sprite. Watch out for this space.

Salman Khan rescues Ajay Devgan!

Mumbai: Ajay Devgan is known to be the most chilled-out person on the sets, but he too apparently lost his cool on the sets of London Dreams when he found out that the outfits he needed to wear for some crucial scenes in the movie were not fitting him.

DNA has learnt that the situation was saved by Salman Khan's timely intervention who gave Ajay outfits from his personal collection which was luckily similar to those that Kajol's hubby was supposed to flaunt.

A source close to the development informs, "Ana Singh is the costume designer for the film and she has worked with Ajay for many years now. She had made all the outfits for the actor but the goof up happened when Vipul Shah (the director) while strolling in London suddenly loved something from Zara, picked it up for Ajay and did not check with Ana thinking that since the size was the same, it would fit Ajay well."

The insider adds, "On the day of the shoot, to everybody's shock Ajay's wardrobe was found to be ill-fitting. Nothing could be done about it and it was upsetting, but thankfully Salman came to the rescue and became Ajay's stylist for those shots by giving his personal clothes. He saved the day."

Confirming this, Vipul says, "Ajay is always cool as a cucumber and so we did not have any problems from his end as he was willing to go ahead with the shoot if alterations made things better. The problem was with an overcoat which we thought would fit Ajay fine but after Ajay wore it, the coat was hanging on him. We were upset as without it the look that we wanted to stick to for the film was getting ruined. At that moment Salman rescued our film's scenes as he gave Ajay something that he was carrying and it was quite similar to what we wanted. He became Ajay's stylist for all the shots. Ajay too returned the favour. He gave his own clothes to Salman during shooting."

Kalki Koechlin:Acting is like yoga for me

Dev. D girl Kalki Koechlin is balancing movies with theatre. She says acting is like yoga for her.

26-year-old Kalki isn’t eager to cash in on her newfound fame post her portrayal of Chanda in Anurag Kashyap’s modern interpretation of Devdas . Rather, after her Bollywood debut the girl went back to her first love (no, not Anurag Kashyap ) – theatre. She recently staged a self-scripted play in New Delhi.

“Acting is like yoga for me. It makes me happy; so now I am trying to create a balance between theatre and Bollywood,” Kalki is quoted by a news agency.

The unconventional looking actress said theatre hones an actor’s skills.

“Theatre is my passion but unfortunately in this world you can't survive doing only theatre. Theatre is an actor's medium and it sharpens your acting skills, but it doesn't give you enough money to survive,” Kalki rued.

Speaking about her play ‘The Skeleton Woman’, Kalki told the agency: “I have been working on this play ever since ‘Dev D’ got over. I knew that I immediately didn't want to act in another movie; hence I started working on the play.”

But what about movies? Isn’t she willing to sign anymore projects in Bollywood?

“I would rather wait for doing something interesting than get myself caught in the stereotypical roles. Unfortunately there are so many stories to tell through this medium but nothing interesting is coming my way,” Kalki revealed.

However, Kalki has agreed to act in Kashyap’s next film ‘Happy Ending’. Though she doesn’t like to speak much about her personal relationship with Kashyap (with whom she’s living in), she does concede passion for work brings them together.

“We are two different individuals but what brings us together is our passion for work. We are very objective when it comes to work. Working with him is a delight because our understanding level is perfect,” she said.

Runs for the money 'Cricketainment'

Rumours are abuzz that Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, George Michael and Snow Patrol have been roped in to up the glamour quotient at today's inaugural ceremony of the Indian Premier League in South Africa.

While we're still not sure if IPL chairman Lalit Modi is to be thanked for this bizarre line-up, it's no surprise that A-list entertainers are being spoken of in the same breath as cricket.

The Rs107.9 billion (Dh8bn) event, which kicks off today in Cape Town, continues to silence critics in its second season as 'cricketainment' reaches fever pitch. Bollywood stars, cheerleaders, multi-million dollar music videos and even a feature film are all heady ingredients that have transformed this gentlemanly game of cricket into a lucrative cash cow with its large spectator turnout.

Once just limited to fans of the sport, IPL's ever-growing glitz and glamour has even witnessed 70-year-old grandmothers hollering with the pom-pom brigade, clad in their favourite team's colours.

"That's the universal appeal of IPL," comes the response from Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, in a chat with Emirates Business. "Even with its mass support, cricket was always a sport for niche audience; these ingredients – as you call it – simply broaden the appeal to a wider fanbase."

Zinta, along with superstar Shah Rukh Khan and actress Juhi Chawla, were pioneering members of the Bollywood brigade that bit into the lion's share at IPL's very first player auction in 2007; many critics accuse them of dolling up cricket, which today stands at the precipice of losing its identity as a noble sport with cash-rich stars such as Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty buying their way into the game.

Zinta is part-owner and brand ambassador of Mohali team Kings XI Punjab, purchased for $76 million (Dh279m) and features star player and captain Yuvraj Singh (bought for $1.06m); while Khan, along with fellow actress Juhi Chawla and husband Jai Mehta, co-own the $75m Kolkata Knight Riders, featuring star player and captain Sourav Ganguly (bought for $1.09m).

Had the two stars simply limited their affairs to the business of sports, the marriage of cricket and entertainment would have taken many more years to give birth to cricketainment. In the buzz leading up to the onset of season one in 2008, both Zinta and Khan put their talents to the test by prancing around in music videos to rope in more ad money, revenue and fans.

While Zinta's was a mediocre effort that featured king of Punjabi pop Daler Mehndi, it was Khan's slick craftsmanship that steered composer duo Vishal-Shekhar's 2 Hot 2 Cool to the top of the album charts. The fact that King Khan, as the media calls him, was seen shaking a hip in his team's black and gold colours had female fans lining up at Knight Riders matches to catch a glimpse of their idol.

Clearly inspired by this moneymaking enterprise, Kingfisher Airlines chief and member of Indian parliament Vijay Mallya roped in Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif as brand ambassador for his Bangalore Royal Challengers team.

Since making her debut in the film Baazigar (1993), she has appeared in nearly 40 Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada language films, her first leading role being in the 1994 Aag.

Her performances in Dhadkan (2000) and Rishtey (2002) were appreciated, while her portrayal of an AIDS patient in Phir Milenge (2004) won her many accolades.

Her younger sister Shamita Shetty is also a Bollywood film actress.

Shetty has been embroiled in various controversies including suspected Mafia links.

In 2006 she was issued with a warrant on charges of obscenity.

After taking part in the British Celebrity Big Brother TV show in 2007, Shetty was crowned the winner with 63% of the final vote, after an international racism controversy involving her and fellow contestants Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd.

This was followed by a re-establishment of her status in the film industry in 2007 when she appeared in two successive movies, Life in a... Metro and Apne, with her performance in the former drawing positive reviews.

Shilpa Shetty was born in a traditional close-knit family in Mangalore that hails from the matrilineal Bunt community.

She is the eldest daughter of Surendra and Sunanda Shetty, manufacturers of tamper-proof caps for the pharmaceutical industry.

Her native language is Tulu although she speaks several other languages at differing levels, including English, Kannada, Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Urdu and basic French.

In Mumbai, she attended St. Anthony Girls' High School in Chembur, and later attended Podar College in Matunga.

A trained Bharatanatyam dancer, she is also into sports, was the captain of the volleyball team in school, has earned a black belt in Karate and is currently a dancesport expert and enthusiast.

Shetty currently lives in Mumbai with her parents and younger sister Shamita Shetty, who is also a Bollywood actress. They worked together once in the film Fareb (2005).

At 5 ft 10 inches (178 cm), Shilpa Shetty is among the tallest actresses in Bollywood.

It was revealed on 29 March 2009, that Shilpa has recently purchased a house on Saint George's Hill in Surrey, England with her boyfriend Raj Kundra

Shetty started her career by modelling for Limca in 1991 at age 16, and made her film debut in 1993 with Baazigar, portraying a woman murdered by her psychopathic boyfriend.

Shetty took the supporting role of Seema, co-starring alongside Shahrukh Khan and Kajol; the film was a major success and earned her a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

In February 2007, Shetty attended a reception at the House of Commons by invitation of Keith Vaz MP to meet with then Prime Minister Tony Blair.

She was also invited to meet with Queen Elizabeth II at Marlborough House in London in March 2007.

She was the subject of a Sky One documentary entitled The Real Shilpa Shetty, which was produced by British television production company Twofour.

The large number of commercial offers that Shilpa received after winning Celebrity Big Brother themselves became reason for controversy with an increasing number of accusations about her riding the 'racism' wave to commercial gain.

She was on the cover of the first issue of OK Magazine to be sold in India.

In August 2008, Shetty began hosting the second season of Bigg Boss, the Indian version of Big Brother. Controversially, Jade Goody was one of the initial housemates.

Goody left the Bigg Boss House early in the series after receiving news that she had cervical cancer, of which she later died on 22 March 2009.

In February 2009 Shilpa and her business partner Raj Kundra became part owners of the Indian Premier League franchise cricket team Rajasthan Royals (current champions) by paying approximately US $15.4 million for a 11.7% stake.

Shetty is a long-time PETA supporter and has assisted the campaign by posing for photographs in a figure-hugging tiger costume.

She previously dated Akshay Kumar, but the couple broke up in 2000 after he started dating Shetty's friend and fellow actress Twinkle Khanna after a previous indiscretion, which led to Shetty's successful suing of Stardust Magazine for publishing a "damaging" report about the affair.

In May 2003 a controversy erupted over alleged links between Shetty's parents and the Indian underworld. The Surat police issued arrest warrants against her parents on charges of extortion.

In April 2006, a Madurai court issued non-bailable warrants against Shetty and Reema Sen for "posing in an obscene manner" in photographs published by a Tamil newspaper.

On April 15, 2007, Richard Gere kissed Shetty on the cheek several times in jest during an AIDS-awareness event. The kiss, considered an attack on India's cultural and moral values, prompted protesters - alleged members of the extremist Hindu group Shiv Sena - to beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks.

Cape Town awaits IPL celebrity invasion

CAPE TOWN (AFP) — Cape Town is readying for the biggest celebrity influx of the year as the off-field stars of the Indian Premier League (IPL) converge on the Mother City.

As a popular holiday destination and film-shoot location, Cape Town is no stranger to the rich and famous, but with the glamorous Twenty20 tournament due to start here Saturday, the city is set for a different sort of invasion.

The eight teams in the Indian competition are owned by some of the biggest Bollywood stars and richest people in the world, who will stay at Cape Town's new five-star hotel, One and Only.

Officially opened by local hotelier Sol Kerzner just two weeks ago, One and Only was built with celebrities in mind, and extravagant rooms cost between 610 and 3,880 dollars per night in the low season.

From: www.google.com/hostednews

The IPL task team are camped at the hotel as the tournament approaches, and confirmed that celebrities were expected to arrive from Tuesday.

"All the franchise owners, Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta, the Ambanis, will arrive today," organisers told AFP.

"The only exception is Bangalore owner Vijay Mallya, who will come next week as he first wants to watch his Formula One team, Force India, compete in the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai."

Khan is one of Bollywood's biggest stars and owns the Kolkata Knight Riders, while Shetty is co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals and a former winner of Celebrity Big Brother.

Fellow actress Zinta is part-owner of the Kings XI Punjab franchise and will jet in from Port Elizabeth where she has been watching the team train and attending the fourth ODI between South Africa and Australia.

Business tycoon Mukesh Ambani is the head of the fourth-richest family in the world, and owns the Mumbai Indians through his conglomerate Reliance Industries.

If that weren't enough, the various wives and girlfriends (WAGS) of the players due to compete in the IPL opening weekend will add extra sparkle around Cape Town.

England batsman Kevin Pietersen will return to his homeland Thursday with wife Jessica Taylor, a reality TV star who recently competed in the English show Dancing On Ice.

Bollywood actress Lakshmi Rai is expected to spend some time in Cape Town watching India's heartthrob captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, with the duo rumoured to be dating.

Celebrity watchers will hope Andrew Symonds' girlfriend Katie Johnson, recently voted Australia's top WAG in an online poll, will add some Australian flavour by following his exploits with the Deccan Chargers.

And there's the local contingent, with Jacques Kallis' model partner Shamone Jardim and actress Jeanne Kietzmann, girlfriend of Dale Steyn, set to represent the host nation at gatherings set to dazzle South Africa's fairest city.

The Most Powerful Bollywood Actress Is" Aishwarya Rai Bachchan"

There are a lot of Bollywood actresses out there that people love. These include Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, and Kareena Kapoor. But did you ever stop to wonder who is considered the most powerful of them all? It seems like someone grows in popularity, but it seems that no one can match the level of success Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has reached.

According to a recent survey, Aishwarya Rai Bachcan is the most powerful actress in all of Bollywood. The company Hansa Research claims that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is in the lead compared to rivals such as Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Madhuri Dixit. Hansa Research tests this in categories like popularity, presence in the media, power of persuasion, and overall image through a survey.

Almost ninety-nine percent of respondents recognized Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The other one percent were probably just not interested in her, but probably still knew who she was. The poll helped to confirm the research from a recent study by Celeb Track. This poll rated Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan as the most powerful people in Bollywood.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her sweetheart Abhishek Bachchan are currently filming Mani Ratnam's new film 'Raavan'. To think about her 'most powerful' status, we have to consider the fact that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has branded herself as an international success story. She is recognized for her roles in American films, her modeling career, in addition to her Bollywood accomplishments. That's why it's not really news that she would be so well recognized in surveys all over the world and especially in India, she's everywhere!

So we want to know what you think about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan being considered the most powerful actress in Bollywood. Do you think she's involved in Bollywood enough to be honored with that sentiment? Give us your thoughts.

Katrina Kaif becomes the new face of Barbie

Bollywood beauties are taking over the world - move over Angelina Jolie and Eva Mendez, there are two new girls in town to steal your limelight as two Bollywood hotties become the new face of two leading international brands - Barbie and Estee Lauder.

There was once a time when international cosmetic brands and designers were afraid to use Indian beauties to endorse their product. Why so? Perhaps the inclination to use Hollywood starlets had a universal appeal? Or maybe because there simply weren’t enough Indian models that had that certain je ne sais quai which designer houses and cosmetic brands alike felt compelled to recruit for their ad campaign? However in recent years things have changed and everyone has gone Bollywood mad! Last year international cosmetics brand MAC launched its first Bollywood range MAC goes India with Indian designer Manish Arora. There are also more Indian models working the catwalk in Milan, Paris and London and of course not to forget Shilpa Shetty winning Celebrity Big Brother in 2007! Lets face it, it is after all her success in the show which increased awareness of the Bollywood film industry in the UK. Keeping herself in the public eye, Shetty successfully launched her own perfume which sold out within the first month and since then has starred in her own theatrical production about Bollywood! What a big change from 10 years ago?!

Anirban Das, CEO of Pinto’s management team is keen not to have her type-casted as a Bollywood starlet which could be one of the factors which Estee Lauder considered when selecting Pinto to endorse the cosmetic brand - “Freida can't be compared to Aishwarya because we're not pitching her as an Indian girl in international films. Freida is a true global face."

And from one of the biggest Bollywood exports to the international film scene, to one of the biggest imports to have graced the Bollywood silver screen from the UK - Katrina Kaif. The super sexy starlet is the new face of Barbie, but she wasn’t the brand’s first or even second choice…

Aishwarya Rai Bachan was eagerly approached by Mattel, the brand behind Barbie, but according to reports the star rejected the request to be immortalised as a Barbie doll due to her professional commitments. Mattel’s second choice was Bollywood newcomer and chocolate girl Genelia D’souza who starrred alongside Amir Khan’s nephew Imran Khan in the 2008 release Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. It is thought her cutesy, youthful qualities appealed to the brand, however D’souza too declined the offer.

Other international celebrities who have lent there look and become the faces of Barbie include Diana Ross, Cher and Beyonce; Katrina Kaif is the first Indian to became a Barbie Doll.

Congratulations are therefore due to both Katrina Kaif and Freida Pinto on landing these two international campaigns. As Brit-Asians we should really be proud of these two Indian beauties, especially Katrina Kaif as she is Brit-Asian herself!

Katrina Kaif in new SRK movie

  • Katrina Kaif now officially enjoys Barbie Girl status. She was chosen by doll manufacturers Mattel to represent India on the iconic toy’s 50th anniversary and is honoured, “To have your face on dolls that you’ve played with from childhood is flattering” she said. To launch the initiative, Kats walked the ramp in a Barbie outfit at Lakme Fashion Week. Whatever next; Salman Khan as Ken?

  • To Demonstrate the gulf between the woods — Holly and Bolly — Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto will pocket R27.5m for her next role, way more than Bollywood’s highest earner Kareena Kapoor who is on R15m. Aishwarya normally bags as much but is doing Shan kar’s Robot with Rajni kanth for only R8m. Pinto, who stars in Woody Allen’s next film with Sir Anthony Hopkins and Josh Brolin, has also signed an Israeli film for Julian Schnabel. It’s ad apted from Rula Jebreal’s book about Hind Husseini, founder of an orphanage in Jerusalem after the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. It will be shot in the Palestinian territories.

  • After making her mark opposite Aamir Khan in Ghajini, south star Asin could soon find herself romancing his rival Shahrukh. SRK is believed to have recommended her for an upcoming Yash Raj project which was to have star red Katrina Kaif, but while he doesn’t mind working with a star who was previously linked to Aamir, he is uncomfortable working with anyone currently linked to Salman. Asin’s going places in a hurry; the Big Bazaar string of supermarkets has signed her and cricketer MS Dhoni as brand ambass adors. And Dhoni himself is on the move as director David Dhawan convinced him to act in Hook Yaa Crook, a cricket film set in a maximum security prison. John Abraham leads the cast alongside Shreyas Talpade and the delectable Genelia D’Douza.

Biography: Truly the most critically acclaimed among his peers, Aamir made his mark in Bollywood with the massive hit Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), which was released when he was 23. Aamir is one of the three Khans that ruled Bollywood in the Nineties, the other being Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Known as perfectionist, he insists on getting a finished script before committing to a film and also refuses to work on more than one film at a time. He does this to create believable characters, rather than just playing himself in film after film. Aamir will go to great lengths to give a convincing portrayal - like, it is said, drinking heavily in order to play a drunken scene in Raja Hindustani (1996), even though he doesn't drink in real life. Some critics call him the most complete actor today for his ablility to do diverse roles. He refuses to attend awards ceremonies saying he doesn’t believe in the authenticity of the selection and winning process.

He has given sterling performances in a string of blockbustes inccliding Dil (1990), Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1990), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Rangeela (1995), Raja Hindustani (1996), Ishq (1997), Ghulam (1998) and Sarfarosh (1999), Lagaan (2001) and Taare Zameen Par (2007).
